Shri Govindashtakam Lyrics in Sanskrit with Meaning

Govina Ashtakam

Govindashtakam consists of 8 Slokas and it was composed by Adi Shankaracharya.

These slokas are written in praise of Shri Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. Here, both hindi and english lyrics of the mantras are given with their meaning (in english).

-अथ श्रीगोविन्दाष्टकं-
सत्यं ज्ञानमनन्तं नित्यमनाकाशं परमाकाशं।
गोष्ठप्राङ्गणरिङ्खण-लोलमनायासं परमायासं।।
मायाकल्पितनानाकारमनाकारं भुवनाकारं।
क्ष्माया नाथमनाथं प्रणमत गोविन्दं परमानन्दम्।१।

satyam jnāna manantam nitya-manākāsham paramākāsham
goshtha-prānanga-nārinkhana-lolamanāyāsam paramāyāsam
māyākalpita-nānākāra-manākāram bhuvanākāram
kshmāyā nātham-anātham pranamata govindam paramānandam.1

मृत्स्नामत्सीहेति यशोदाताडनशैशव सन्त्रासं।
व्यदितवक्त्रालोकितलोकालोकचतुर्दशलोकालिम्।।
लोकत्रयपुरमूलस्तम्भं लोकालोकमनालोकं।
लोकेशं परमेशं प्रणमत गोविन्दं परमानन्दम्।२।

mritsnāmat-sīheti yashodātādana-shaishava santrāsam
vyadita-vaktrālokita-lokāloka-chaturdasha-lokālim
lokatraya-puramoola-stambham lokālokamanālokam
lokesham paramesham pranamata govindam paramānandam.2

त्रैविष्टपरिपुवीरघ्नं क्षितिभारघ्नं भवरोगघ्नं।
कैवल्यं नवनीताहारमनाहारं भुवनाहारम्।।
वैमल्यस्फुटचेतोवृत्तिविशेषाभासमनाभासं।
शैवं केवलशान्तं प्रणमत गोविन्दं परमानन्दम् ।३।

traivishta-paripuvīraghnam kshitibhaaraghnam bhavarogaghnam.
kaivalyam navanītāhāra manāhāram bhuvanāhāram.
vaimalya-sfuta-cheto-vritti-visheshābhāsa manābhāsam.
shaivam kevalashāntam pranamata govindam paramānandam.3

गोपालं प्रभुलीलाविग्रहगोपालं कुलगोपालं।
गोपीखेलनगोवर्धनधृतिलीलालालितगोपालम्।।
गोभिर्निगदित गोविन्दस्फुतनामानं बहुनामानं।
गोपीगोचरपथिकं प्रणमत गोविन्दं परमानन्दम्।४।

gopālam prabhulīla-vigraha-gopālam kulagopālam.
gopīkhelana govardhana-dhruti-līla-lālita-gopālam.
gobhirnigadita govinda-sfutanāmānam bahunāmānam.
gopīgochara-pathikam pranamata govindam paramānandam.4

गोपीमण्डलगोष्ठिभेदं भेदावस्थमभेदाभं।
शश्वद्गोखुरनिर्घूतोद्धतधूलीधूसरसौभाग्यम्।।
श्रद्धाभक्तिगृहीतानन्दमचिन्त्यं चिन्तितसद्भावं।
चिन्तामणिमहिमानं प्रणमत गोविन्दं परमानन्दम्।५।

gopīmandala-goshthibhedam bhedāvasthama-bhedābham.
shashvad-gokhura-nirdhūtoddhata-dhūlī dhūsara-saubhagyam.
shraddhābhakti-grihītānandam-achintyam chintita-sadbhāvam.
chintāmani-mahimānam pranamata govindam paramānandam.4

स्नानव्याकुलयोशिद्वस्त्रमुपादायागमुपारूढं।
व्यदित्सन्तिरथ दिग्वस्त्रा ह्युपुदातुमुपाकर्षन्तम्।।
निर्धूतद्वयशोकविमोहं बुद्धं बुद्धेरन्तस्थं।
सत्तामात्रशरीरं प्रणमत गोविन्दं परमानन्दम्।६।

snāna-vyākula yoshidwastra-amupādāyāgam-amupārūdham.
vyaditsantiratha digvastrā hyupudātum-upākarshantam.
nirdhūtadvaya-shokavimoham buddham buddherantastham.
sattāmātra-sharīram pranamata govindam paramānandam.6

कान्तं कारणकारणमादिमनादिं कालमनाभासं।
कालिन्दीगतकालियशिरसि मुहुर्नृत्यन्तं नृत्यन्तम्।।
कालं कालकलातीतं कलिताशेषं कलिदोषघ्नं।
कालत्रयगतिहेतुं प्रणमत गोविन्दं परमानन्दम्।७।

kāntam kārana-akāranam-aadim-anādim kālam-anabhāsam
kālindīgata kāliyashirasi muhur-nrityantam sunrityantam.
kālam kālakalātītam kalitāshesham kalidoshaghnam.
kālatraya-gatihetum govindam paramānandam.7

वृन्दावनभुवि वृन्दारकगणवृन्दाराध्यं वन्देऽहं।
कुन्दाभामलमन्दस्मेरसुधानन्दं सुहृदानन्दम्।।
वन्द्याशेषमहामुनिमानसवन्द्यानन्दपदद्वन्द्वं।
वन्द्याशेषगुणाब्धिं प्रणमत गोविन्दं परमानन्दम्।८।

vrindāvanabhuvi vrindāraka-gana-vrindā-aarādhyam vandeham
kundābhāmala-mandasmera-sudhanandam suhridānandam
vandyāshesha-mahamunimānasa- vandyānanda-padadvandam
vandyāshesha-gunābdhim pranamata govindam paramānandam.8

फलश्रुतिः
गोविन्दाष्टकमेतदधीते गोविन्दार्पितचेता यो।
गोविन्दाच्युत माधव विष्णो गोकुलनायक कृष्णेति।।
गोविन्दाङ्घ्रिसरोजध्यानसुधाजलधौतसमस्ताघो।
गोविन्दं परमानन्दामृतमन्तःस्थं स तमभ्येति।।

phalashruti- govindāshtaka-metadadhīte govindarpita-cheta yo.
govindā-achyuta mādhava vishno gokulanāyaka krishneti.
govindānghrisaroja-dhyānasudhājala-dhauta-samastāgho.
govindam paramānanda-amruta-mantah-stham sa tamabhyeti.

॥ इति श्रीमच्छङ्कराचार्यविरचितं श्रीगोविन्दाष्टकं सम्पूर्णम् ॥

Govinda Ashtakam Meaning- English

1. [all of you] worship supreme bliss Govinda, who is knowledge, infinite, eternal and free from Akasha (space), who is the highest light.

Govinda, who was eager just like a child to crawl in cow-pen, who is free from worldly difficulties, who appears manifold because of Maya, who appears as the world itself, who is lord of the earth (Bhu devi) and Sri (Lakshmi), no one is above him.

2. [all of you] worship supreme bliss Govinda, who showed fear just like a child when beaten by Yashoda saying, "You are eating mud" and in whose opened mouth was seen the row of 14 worlds, visible and invisible.

Govinda, who supports all three worlds (swarga, prithvi and patala), who is Vishvaroopa ( a form of worlds), visible and invisible, who cannot be seen, who is the guardian of the universe and surpreme lord.

3. [all of you] worship supreme bliss Govinda, who killed the fearsome enemies of the Devas and lessened the weight of the world, who takes away the illness of birth (from his worshippers), who is one, who had butter for his food, though not requiring food at all.

Govinda, who swallowed the world (during pralaya), who shines wonderfully in the pure and clear mental mode, who can not be discovered by anyone or anything, who adores Shiva,  who is totally auspicious.

4. [all of you] worship supreme bliss Govinda, who is the defender of the universe, who through his Lila made his advent into the world as Gopala, who is the protector of the race (of Yadavas) and of the cows.

The one who made the cowherds delighted by raising up the Govardhana mountain through his Lila where the Gopis used to play, whose name Govinda is clearly uttered by the cows (or scriptures), who has many names, and who is beyond the grasp of the ignorant.

5. [all of you] worship supreme bliss Govinda, the one who was present in each of the numerous classes of gopis, who appears in various forms, who is one and non-dual, whose magnificent form was hidden by the dust always created by the back legs of the cow.

The one whose blissful essence is realized by sraddha and bhakti (faith), who is incomprehensible, whose presence is known to the wise, and whose brilliance is like that of the Chintamani gem.

6. [all of you] worship supreme bliss Govinda, who climbed up a tree carrying the garments of women engaged in their bath, and who took them next to him in order to give the clothes to those who were naked, and who wanted to get their clothes back.

who is free from duality, sorrow, and illusion, who is intelligent, who is in the soul, and who is pure existence.

7. [all of you] worship supreme bliss Govinda, who is beautiful, who is the supreme cause, who is the root of all, who is without origin, whose color is just like the dark clouds, who always dances excessively on the hood of the Kalindhi serpent inhabiting the Kalindhi River (Yamuna).

The one who manifests himself as time, who transcends the measure of time, who knows all things, who is the disruptor of the evil of Kali, and who is the master of the motion of the three dimensions of time.

8. [all of you] worship supreme bliss Govinda, Who is in the land of Vrindavan, revered and admired by several groups of gods, whose bliss of a spotless smile resembles the Kunda flower.

who is eternal bliss, whose feet are adored and worshipped by the minds of all the great sages adored by all, and who is the sea of virtuous qualities.

9. Through fixing his gaze on Govinda and uttering the names of Govinda, Achyuta, Madhava, Vishnu, Gokulanayaka and Krishna, he, who recites this Govindaastakam, has all his sins washed off by the nectar of meditation on the lotus-feet of Govinda, the indwelling Govinda, the nectar (Amrita) of ultimate bliss, is attained.

Govindashtakam Benefits-

Adi Shankara says, "the one who recited Govinda ashtakam keeping his/her faith in Shri Krishna, gets his sins washed off. He achieves the nectar of supreme bliss".

A devotee should recite this ashtaka one or two times a day as suitable to him/her. Or it can be recited at least on special ocassions and events.
